Detection of Planetary Transits Across a Sun - like

چکیده
We report high precision, high cadence photometric measurements of the star HD 209458, which is known from radial velocity measurements to have a planetary mass companion in a close orbit. We detect two separate transit events at times that are consistent with the radial velocity measurements. In both cases, the detailed shape of the transit curve due to both the limb darkening of the star and the nite size of the planet is clearly evident. Assuming stellar parameters of 1.1 R and 1.1 M , we nd that the data are best interpreted as a gas giant with a radius of 1:27 0:02 R Jup in an orbit with an inclination of 87:1 0:2. We present values for the planetary surface gravity, escape velocity, and average density, and discuss the numerous observations that are warranted now that a planet is known to transit the disk of its parent star.

Detecting transits from Earth-sized planets around Sun-like stars
Context. Detecting regular dips in the light curve of a star is an easy way to detect the presence of an orbiting planet. CoRoT is a Franco-European mission launched at the end of 2006, and one of its main objectives is to detect planetary systems using the transit method. Aims. In this paper, we present a new method for transit detection and determine the smallest detected planetary radius, as...
متن کامل1 FRESIP : A Mission to Determine the Character and Frequency of Extra - Solar Planets Around Solar - like Stars
FRESIP (FRequency of Earth-Sized Inner Planets) is a mission designed to detect and characterize Earth-size planets around solar-like stars. The sizes of the planets are determined from the decrease in light from a star that occurs during planetary transits and the orbital period is determined from the repeatability of the transits. Measurements of these parameters can be compared to theories t...
متن کاملArtificial Intelligence on the Final Frontier: Using Machine Learning to Find New Earths
For ages, mankind has looked towards the stars and wondered if our Earth is the only place habitable for life. Now, with recent advancements in technology, we can use powerful telescopes, such as NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope [?], to observe stars in the visible universe to see if these extrasolar stars have extrasolar planets (called ‘exoplanets’) like our Sun and its planets. Specifically, lo...
متن کاملModelling solar-like variability for the detection of Earth-like planetary transits II. Performance of the three-spot modelling, harmonic function fitting, iterative non-linear filtering and sliding boxcar filtering
Aims. As an extension of a previous work, we present a comparison of four methods of filtering solar-like variability to increase the efficiency of detection of Earth-like planetary transits by means of box-shaped transit finder algorithms. Two of these filtering methods are the harmonic fitting method and the iterative non-linear filter that, coupled respectively with the Box Least-Square (BLS...
